Description
Heart Mountain is an unusual, isolated mountain rising above the arid Bighorn Basin of northwestern Wyoming. Prominently visible from the town Cody all the way to Powell, this 8,300 mountain is said to have formed from a tectonic thrust fault, referred to as a "Klippe." In short, it is basically an ancient volcanic rock slide. Shaped by years of erosion, its crooked peak loosely resembles a heart from certain angles, hence the name.
Cedar trees and sagebrush dot the dry landscape on a dreary, cloudy day. Wyoming's high elevation plains and basins experience rapid changes in weather. Low-lying rain clouds hang in the sky just over this western landscape, offering a reprieve from harsh sun earlier in the day. This grayish blue mood is very common in Wyoming during all seasons, and while many people hate it, I find it to be relaxing. A simple wooden fence divides the landscape.
Of unfortunate but historical significance, the Heart Mountain Relocation Center, a Japanese Internment Camp during World War II, is located nearby. Many businesses in and around Cody are also named after this mystical mountain.
